Today we watched the documentary, The Contestant. I think we all really enjoyed it. The movie takes place in late 1990s Japan. There was a very “Truman”-like TV show on Japan at the time called A Life in Prizes.
The movie was about a young Japanese comedian, named Nasubi. Which is apparently the name for Eggplant…long story, short, he is the inspiration for the Eggplant emoji’s meaning.
I won’t give too much away, but he was the subject of a reality TV Show where he had to live off of winning prizes from magazines. He was unaware that his life was being broadcast to the public! Pretty insane.
